The funny thing about people saying black guys are being made the face of street harassment is that, at least to me, the stereotypical “woman walking past the construction site” scene you see on tv or cartoons always involved generic sweaty white men. I’m sure catcalling isn’t a word that originated with black people, so clearly it’s been going on before us.

The reason it’s primarily insecure black guys defending it might be the same reason it was primarily black guys defending Ray Rice even though all races get involved with domestic violence. Maybe it’s one of the few places they feel they have control. If street harassment is an entitled guy saying “what are you gonna do about it,” then it sounds like it’s a show of power more than politeness. So white guys don’t get too upset about it because their power is elsewhere in society…instead they’ll be defending their right to use the n word or supporting Zimmerman and Darren Wilson. That’s just my guess.

As far as street harassment vs being polite, I’m thinking some of these guys lack self awareness. I grew up in the south before I moved to DC, where street harassers go hard in the paint. From what I’ve witnessed, if your mouth is just saying “hi” to a beautiful stranger, but your eyes are bugging out cartoon style and looking her up and down, that might no longer be a simple “hi.” And certain approaches might be more or less acceptable in a club or lounge compared to the savagery that goes on in clubs, but not on a public street where someone may feel extra vulnerable. As one who has on occasion been catcalled, both by women and a group of gay dudes (an unfortunate turn down the wrong street in Atlanta), it’s not always what is said but the unwanted attention it attracts that might cause discomfort. A woman may love the way her legs look in the dress she’s wearing that day; it’s a different thing altogether to hear a stranger comment on those legs within earshot of other strangers.

Jian Ghomeshi is not into BDSM, he likes to attack women that have no idea what’s coming. He could easily find a woman that’s would love for him to do those thing to him, but that is not what turned him on. He’s getting off from the fear and helplessness of his victims. I had something like that occur with me.

When I was in high school I scooped this short emo chick. She told me she was kinky and I was good because I thought I was a freak. Naw dog. We start making out and she grabs my balls and and bites me on my face. Right under my fucking eye. I pushed her off me and she tells me to punch her in the chest. I refused and she cussed me the hell out. Two weeks later she approaches me in the school basketball court. She pulls her short down to show bruises on her chest and tells me she found herself a real man.

The big difference was that she could not overpower me in that situation. If the roles were reversed and I was the a woman, there is no telling what would have happened that afternoon.

Lena Dunham is a truly repellant human being. She dehumanizes others just like the right-wingers she rants about and generally has the same worldview as ISIS (yeah, I went all the way there, back, and back again).
