You can’t help somebody who doesn’t want to help themselves. At the start of the episode Nicky seemed pretty set on his life being the way it is and it’s extremely sad he never got to make things right with Jack.

It’s actually good to finally see Jack displaying more traits that show he is human and isn’t the perfect dad – yes the drinking was definitely serious but the Nicky situation was a whole other animal. On Kevin -what Rebecca said about Kevin on the outside THAT is exactly what I first noticed about Kevin (his exterior )and I immediately did not warm up to him at first ,but with more background given to us about Kevin as the show progressed it definitely changed my initial superficial opinion of him and made me take notice of (his interior)in a great way.

Kate and Randall needed that revelation about Jack not being perfect – great observation by Randall too! Good job Nicky taking one step to get better in his life , sometimes that’s all it takes.

    Thanks Rod and Bassey,

Hey Bossi and Rod! I faithfully listen to your This Is Us recaps! I love the chemistry you all have!

This week really hit me. For whatever reason, I was so put off and upset with Nicky’s response to Kevin’s help. But when Nicky told Rebecca that he didn’t feel like a person anymore and he wished he could but that it was too late, it broke me. I’m naturally empathetic, and so seeing someone not feeling human was incredibly sad. Y’all

But just when I thought I had made it to the finish line, this show, as it so often does, gut punched me by having Kevin down that bottle of Jack. I was in my house fighting the air like Cuba Gooding Jr. He looked so defeated in the car with Rebecca! I couldn’t handle it!!

Anyways, can’t wait for next week’s Beth-centric show!

    Hi Rod and Bassey,

I guess I’ll start with the last of the episode. It hurt my heart to see Kevin slip and drink that whiskey, especially against the juxtaposition of Rebecca telling him she is proud of him. Having said that what happened is realistic. Recovery is a lifelong endeavor and someone newly sober and under that level of stress, a relapse is not unexpected. I also wonder if the show will use Kevin’s relapse to highlight the difference in Kevin’s relationship with Zoe versus the relationship Kevin had with She Who Must Not Be Named.

I liked the Randall and Kate time, not just because they rarely get scenes together but because it highlights that even though Jack has been canonized in death, their selective memories are true as well.

While on the subject of unreliable memories/narratives, I didn’t get to comment on the last episode, but I wanted to say that Nicky is an unreliable narrator for several reasons 1) He was under the influence when his actions resulted in the Vietnamese boy’s death; 2) Very rarely do people remember/retell their stories in a way that makes them the villain (notice how Nicky’s retelling of events omitted the things that convinced Jack of his malicious intent, his treatment of the boy and his statements about the people of Vietnam); and 3) As we saw with Randall and Kate, the passage of time tends to soften recollections of life’s harshest truths. I’m not saying that Nicky is lying, I’m saying that the truth he wants to be true may not be what is true. I mean, technically, Jack wasn’t lying when he said Nicky died in Vietnam because the Nicky Jack knew and loved died a spiritual death, wheat was left was no longer that person.

So next week we get Queen Rashad as Beth’s mom. I can’t wait. Did you read the show-runners state that the series story-arch has This Is Us ending with season six?

I love your recaps. It is the same boy that Jack healed his leg. His mother gave Jack the necklace. The boys death makes Kevin’s necklace more meaningful to Jack. For Jack, Nicky died when the boy did. Hopefully, they will connect the stories.

    Best regards,
    Crystal

I’m just listening to your recap of Songbird part 1 and I wanted to point out that I was more concerned with Nicky having Jack’s work address rather than his home address. Remember in the 70’s (ok this is just my old person memory, you probably weren’t even born yet) there were phone books, and in addition to your phone number, your address was also listed.

I have no idea how he knew where Jack was working.

Hey Rod and Bassey just wanted to share this awesome ‘This is Us’ news about the actor – Niles Fitch who plays 17 year old Randall on This Is Us , so happy for the kid, he and the rest of the cast won Sag Awards.

    Hey guys,

I love listening to your recaps. When you guys were talking about Nicky and the accident scene you said something that made me connect some dots and I had to share. When you said Nicky jumped out of the boat and saved himself, it clicked for me that Randall gave all that TMI about Jack’s death: “there was a fire. *HE GOT US OUT* but he had a heart attack from the smoke inhalation.” Both Nicky and Jack were met with a horrible accident, Nicky saved himself, Jack saved the kid(s).

Also Zoe is not Beth. Kevin better be careful just bringing random family members to stay with him!

I agree with y’all, our show is back!

    Danielle
