Great review. I think this was a good movie but I really think that we lost a lot when they had to replace Steven Yeun with Pulman. I mean, he was okay, but didn’t Pulman his own weight. Pugh saved his performance in this but the the emotional depth that Yeun could have brought would have made for a great performance.
The other thing I think you missed in this review was a discussion of the decision to eliminate Taskmaster, which really could have provided some interesting interactions with the different characters had they let her survive a little longer.
Thanks for your review and I will try to catch up with your movies and leave comments a little sooner, y’all’s reviews are the only ones I listen to – not because I haven’t tried, but because you are the only ones that add something that make the reviews worth it. Keep up the good work!
Ya’ll nailed it, this movie had heart and to me it ain’t for kids (didn’t see any at my Thursday night viewing). Director Jake Schreier I’ve been sleeping on your work, gonna go check out your other movies, applause to this man. I was only familiar with Beef but I need more. Just like Yelena don’t need to be lonely in NYC anymore, we can be in Avengerz together (I’m good at cleaning too). I screamed in laughter when Val told the press this is The New Avengerz … Chefs Kiss. Protect Val by all means. Even when we saw through her charade for a sec, I thought was she bout to break, ol gurl said America Bout to whoop Wakanda and EVERYBODY IN SPACE. I love Val, she moved on quickly from Party City Cap hahaha. I love this movie for the serious, the funny, the action and what an end credit. I can’t stop saying Avengerz with the Z, I best not run into David Harbour IRL, the Red Guardian finally made it but after a glorious ass whooping. Quick question, would you rather be whooped by Sentry or Hulk or Thor or Cap Marvel? I’m running an experiment.Btw I thought Bucky already won the election in Brave New World or did I forget?
The asterisk delivered! We win together
Took my wife to see this movie and we were blown away. This is the movie that Marvel needed to cleanse the palate so to speak. Watching Yelena tell Alexi, ” I needed you papa!” It came across as it was the first time she has called him that in years!! Because it broke through to him. Bob was a perfect type of foil that they needed. We loved this movie.
The term “return to form” is overused & while I never thought Marvel Studios truly fell off, seeing Thunderbolts having actual locations & not an overreliance on The Volume, which has hurt certain projects, was a sight to behold. So was its allegories on grief & depression. Florence Pugh being the glue to holding a dysfunction group of beings was excellent & having someone like David Harbour be the beating heart as a dimwitted Russian warmed my heart.
That shit in the vault did feel like Snake climbing that infinite ladder in MGS 3, but I’m slowly coming to the realization, even that some interesting foreshadowing.
As for this being “the best Marvel movie since Endgame”? I mean, sure, but you have to include Spider-Man 2 & 3, Doctor Strange 2, Wakanda Forever, Shang Chi, Guardians 3 & in my opinion, Eternals.
That “best movie since” whenever is just doing a lot of unnecessary work, when Thunderbolts is like a lot of its trauma-ridden character: Just trying to exist.
Really good flick.
