As someone who went to theater & watched it with an audience, I came away rather enjoying Highest 2 Lowest, even after the admittedly rough 20 minutes that’s some of Lee’s most hamfisted storytelling in quite sometime. While I thought the rest of the score by Howard Drossin was pretty good, I have to be honest, Rod, I was right there with you & then the film found its focus (& inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s High & Low, which H2L is “reinterpreting”, if not outright remaking). Most of the performances, especially from Denzel & Jeffrey worked as influences from the elder film & using music as the touchstone that sets this whole thing off. Even ASAP Rocky’s metatextual worked on me. While, I don’t outright love the film as I did when I last saw it, months ago, I still think it’s very good, if not great. I highly recommend High & Low, as well.
But honestly, not why I’m here, Rod. Denzel’s “rap standoff” with ASAP before the inspired French Connection scene at the train station, what would you rate Denzel’s skills (from 1 to 5) & should he put out a rap single before he calls it a career?
Clarification: I meant “metatextual character” for ASAP Rocky.
1.5 oh weeeee. Now I got to go find that Grandma and tell her what you said. Not even seeing the now late Latino Jazz icon Eddie Palmieri could move you to add an extra . 5 to round up the score to a 2? 2025 is truly a tough year!
Oh btw the kidnapped kid wasn’t only David King’s son bf, he was also the godson of David da King. I know it won’t change anything. I was laughing in unison with Karen in the background. Lemme go play Young Felon song and act like David King reacted haha. Cool review!
