I think the majority of people who claim to be outraged actually knew what Jamie meant but the clout is so addictive and everyone on social media has to be angry about something so they want to get in the take that will create the most discourse and drive clicks and views in their direction.
I’m sure there are people who did take what he said as anti semetic but those are also the ones who calmed down after the explanation and apology. Some people just want to stay mad.

I see what Rod is saying about the motives between wanting to ban “gay books” and any discussion of the fact that homosexuality exists being different from wanting to keep people uneducated like Karen said. Both points are right but i think the homophobia gets used cynically by the wealthy powerholders to push a narrative that education and educators are a problem. People that would otherwise support better quality education for their children can be conned into taking a position that keeps kids dumber and less likely to push back against the way things have always been done, which is what people in power want.

But just for Info, for my ears that were socialized in Europe it’s a saying right out the antisemitic playbook. One of the classic. One that is followed by something ” and they control all the banks”.
