Rod is joined by J-L Cauvin to discuss some movie trailers and the sports action movie “F1.” And of course we get some hilarious impressions. As a benefit to our premium members you can also watch the Crowdcast video online. I’ve emailed the link out to everyone.

Finally got around to seeing this, not a racing fan but it was enjoyable.
One huge reason to watch this in the theater is the use of ELF (extremely low frequency sound waves). A lot of movies use this for when tanks or rolling in, or similar contexts. However, this movie used ELF in a way I haven’t felt before, increasing it as the cars go into turns and then decreasing it, allowing you to physically feel the acceleration and centripetal forces. And then, when the main character is “flying” there is no ELF. All those low frequencies that you can’t actually hear, but your body feels, were gone. I thought that was much more impressive than the camera work, which was also very good.
However, I think this movie suffered from something that I saw in M3gan 2.0 as well. The bbeg (big bad evil guy) was introduced in a way that is supposed to make us feel like they are trustworthy and / or non-threatening. Then they have their heelturn and we are supposed to be shocked. But both of these movies kinda failed on this regard as I never felt like they were not the bbeg, and the fact that they got away with “hiding in plain sight” made the characters around them look like idjits.
Thanks for the great show, great to hear from Jean Luc (did I get the spelling right?), We gotta get him in a movie as a “disguised” Jon Bernthal!
Hey Rod (and Karen in the background). Shout out to JL. It’s always a good time when you 2 link up. I agreed completely with the F-1 review. It gave me way more than I was expecting. I appreciated Damson going scene for scene with Brad Pitt. He had all the charisma needed to play that arrogant, young star.
I really wanted to know if you’ve had a chance to see any movies in Screen X. The Marcus Theater near me in Minneapolis has been showing movies with extra projectors that use the left and right walls as extra screen for some of the big landscape shots. I first saw this on Thunderbolts and knew that I had to see F-1 with this next. Sitting in the theater during those races and actually having cars in your peripheral vision was crazy. Especially that last race when Sonny was “flying”. I enjoy it much more than 3D and definitely recommend checking that out if you get a chance. I’m not a big fan of Jurassic Park but I might see that in Screen X just for the experience.
Thanks for the dope content. *black fist emoji*
All I got to say is, I really want that JL Bernthal F1 movie now!
Anyway, this is the best any racing film has ever looked, which is unsurprising, given director Joseph Kosinski’s prior releases, but, as y’all pointed out, F1’s actual dialogue can be too dry & some of the characters can feel one-dimensional, imo. Not to mention, it’s too long. If this had the cache of Ron Howard’s Rush or even the characterizations of Days of Thunder, this could’ve been something more than just a looker. They should’ve made this an easy 2 hrs. As an overall popcorn film, it still does get the job done & it’s fun enough to experience in IMAX, Dolby or any premium theater.
This review was a lot of fun. Chilling in Deutschland and listening, while enjoying Karen’s beautiful laugh cameos.
Great breakdown with JL, now I too I’m wondering if this film was that funny or if it was because it was by HAWT folks? Either way, I had a fun time watching F1, good propaganda right there. If I was turning 21/23 right now, I would have tried out for F1 today. I know that “flying ” feeling. Especially on the widescreen too. Great voice impressions hahaha
