He tipping is also way less a thing and only in Restaurants even. I, glad that we don’t have to think about it every time we have an interaction with someone where money is exchanged.
The tipping being rooted in racism reminds me of things you wouldn’t think about being rooted in racism like butter pecan ice cream. The reason butter pecan ice cream is so popular with black people is because we weren’t allowed to eat vanilla ice cream except on the forth of July. Make that make sense. Because we couldn’t have vanilla we had butter pecan which actually worked out for us. Racism makes no damn sense.
All this talk of tipping makes me so happy that I’m in Japan, where there is no tipping… The amazing thing is that most places I go the food prices (adjusted for the overall market) are the same as lower than the pre-tip costs in the US but don’t have a tipping culture. I can’t figure out how American companies are incapable of paying people a living wage, or at least minimum wage, and still making a profit. It’s almost like they are weighed down by upper management and stockholders who are siphoning the money away from the people who earn it…
