Not sure about you Rod or Karen, but Tom King doesn’t miss for me. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is definitely a must read if you haven’t and it will make up for the mid-ness of the movie. Karen I also think it will address your issues with the brightness (the comic is not drab) and the comic actually makes you love Ruthye.
Bummerrrr. Not Milly Alcock’s fault by no means & the cast overall does enough to make it work but when you make something so low stakes, it makes the film by extension super tepid. Supergirl’s not a bad movie & has its moments but it’s definitely filled with such untapped potential that’s too often trying to be something it’s not.
Also, hot take: I’m tired of Krypto. Think we need to give that dog less screen time.
100% agree on Lobo’s involvement, Karen. He wasn’t in the Woman of Tomorrow book & he’s wedged in here like a mandate, especially when two characters are rebellious. It just doesn’t click.
If Supergirl were directed by, say, Gina Prince-Blythewood & Ana Nogueira’s screenplay had a bit more punch, definitely cookin’ with gas. Gillespie doesn’t fit, considering his prior body of work. But it’s just barely fine. And I think I’m being a tad too kind.
A 2026 disappointment, for sure.
Ok, so I rewatched a second time, this past Tuesday, & while I still think it’s a very average movie, it’s just a shame that with its lead being so good, that the substance of it is just lacking so much. My Krypto take was a bit strong, which chock it off to simply being upset in the moment on the first viewing. I’ve even avoided the ridiculous discourse surrounding it, because you know the thing that happens when a Comic Book film fails or underperforms? Talk of “Superhero Fatigue”, when this was not about fatigue & more of a film that had very little to say about its world. We won’t be doing that fatigue shit when Brand New Day potentially breaks box office records in Late July/Early August & the conversation shifts back to the more lazier than Bill Maher’s New Rules: “where’s the originality in Hollywood at?” Y’all know it’s coming. I know it’s coming.
Needle drops were still excessive, though. DC Studios didn’t trust their composer, who’s a woman, btw (Claudia Sarne) to sell the drama. One of many issues w/Suicide Squad (2016).
Anyway, hope my second opinion helped.
