I always enjoy it when Brandon comes on. I hope you can get Justin to come on with him the next time he’s one their podcast medium popcorn is so funny and the only other movie podcast I listen to besides yours.
I gotta admit that I may be suffering from MCU fatigue. The last handful of movies just hasn’t grabbed me and I even though I have Disney+ I haven’t seen any of the MCU shows since Captain America and the Winter Soldier. I did enjoy the last SpiderMan movie and will watch the new one coming out but Fantastic Four put me to sleep but that excitement I used to feel with each subsequent movie just isn’t there anymore. Maybe I’ll get excited again when they put out a new X-men, but I gotta be honest it they don’t cast a good Storm, I’m not going to be that excited about it because the last Storm was mid.
Hey Rod & Karen.
Been thinking of what you said on the prior pregame about letting people who aren’t on board with the MCU to just be not on board. And having just watched Brand New Day (which was fantastic, btw, but won’t spoil) & I’ve seen critiques of it being “overstuffed” which is a common adjective thrown at Superhero material & I think it’s better time now to just let people say what they’re going to say on it & not waste words on people who are either disillusioned or disingenuous. All of us in some way shape or form have watched the cinematic/tv universes of DC, Marvel, Power Rangers, Aliens, Predator etc. for a plethora of years. Be it animated or live-action. And having just experienced my first trip outside the state in 16 years, I’m ready to move on from this trite debate of fatigue or otherwise.
We’re just built for this shit & anyone who isn’t, that’s their prerogative. Not to mention, as y’all pointed out, the FOMO of it all. Even my ass hasn’t finished the final few episodes of Daredevil BA S2 or the animated Spider-Man flick that tells an alternate MCU timeline, but I’m just not going to the thing where I forcibly tell Kevin Feige to slow this shit down. And I take breaks from it & watch something else. People have always had a “fatigue” of a creative. I remember people being “fatigue” of Steven Spielberg in the early 2000s when AI didn’t pan out or when Minority Report “barely” defeated an animated Lilo & Stitch at the box office in 2002. Also, this idea of Superhero “fatigue” or nonsense has been around since those Max Fleischer Superman shorts, calling them “nonsensical” when superheroes are basically derivatives of Greek Gods.
Then again, you can’t please everyone & I’m willing to just let that be, because I’ve had to hear trying to explain to a disinterested person why Wanda Maximoff going rogue was completely earned in Doctor Strange 2. I get it. It hurt you, but I get it.
Also, while Shawn Levy’s no Ryan Coogler, his shit does well. The numbers bare that out. Ghost Rider should be fine. People can call that man various versions of “hack” but Free Guy, Real Steel & Deadpool & Wolverine were hits in one way or another. Them audiences were pretty packed. Internet, once again, is more wrong than a James Harden turnover in the playoffs.
Anyway, thought y’all were great on the subject.
