Now this is a Resident Evil movie. Like y’all said about the prior entries under Paul W.S. Anderson, they were movies that were fun but ultimately bad, I haven’t followed much of whatever was said about Cregger’s take on the lore of this IP, but to quote the Michael Jordan (but I’ll slightly alter the quote): Fuck them fans.
I really think an anthology series should be the way to go with these films. No lore as to what’s going on with Leon, Chris or Albert Wesker, just do a “day in the life” version of these with different directors. It takes pressure off the screenplay & direction, which allows for this film to flourish.
Austin Abrams being the bumbling, stumbling coward is a perfect entry point. He’s the amalgamation of how most casuals go into Resident Evil game: A large sizes of Nope & anxiety.
Cinematography is really this film’s trump card (no pun intended) with incredible use of light. Loved some of the designs of the creatures here, too.
The final 10 or so minutes are definitely silly, but I didn’t mind it.
This is probably my least favorite Cregger film, as despite a lot of greatness here, it’s very “what you see, is what you get” compared to the layers from Weapons & Barbarian. It’s short, too, which is another reason why this works.
