Being completely frank here, I wasn’t a fan of the narrative that James Gunn told. I found a lot of it to be overwrought. Using the political angle with Corto Maltese vs The United States with relations pertaining to who can do what better. Now, where THIS Suicide Squad excels in, is the characters. Many of the expendable, sure; but, Gunn clearly understands this world better than David Ayer (who was only given 6 weeks to write up a script for WB for his film). Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, Polka Dot-Man, Nanaue, Ratcatcher 2, Peacemaker & even Rick Flag shine through. Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller is stellar, too. Clearly, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, John Cena & others got the assignment from Gunn & committed. Also, gone are the tonally drab, uninspired set-pieces from the first film, now replaced by plenty of colors & some solid cinematography overall. It’s flow of action is definitely on another level compared to its awful original. For me, it’s not as good as Shazam, but it’s definitely really good for something that feels very B-movieish.
