Rod, why are you crowdsourcing your language use questions to Twitter when you have a professional cunning linguist, like myself, in your audience to give you answers?

I don’t mind being called Auntie by younger people. I’m a middle aged woman and have no delusions about that. I live up north now but I’m from the south and it was always jarring to me little kids call adults by their first names. I have always taught my kid to add a Miss or Mr in front of someone’s name who is significantly older than them because that’s a sign of respect. I am someone’s Auntie so if some kid or young person called me Auntie I don’t mind but I also think it’s a community thing as well. I don’t mind if other black people refer to me as Auntie. Non blacks, it feels kinda different because they’re not of the community.

I Poland, not related people are called aunt and uncle as a sign of respect by younger people.
It seems to be pretty much the same concept.

Use of aunt & uncle to affectionately refer to close elders is actually quite common in many languages outside of white English… In white English sir (more formal) or pops (more informal, but often perceived as rude) for men and ma’am (more formal) or mum (less formal, but often perceived as rude) are the closest linguistic equivalents, but something is lost in the translation.

Being someone who was officially addressed as Uncle since age 12 by family, I can’t even pretend to fake outrage when a YN calls me Unc cause I been in the game before I knew the game. I just acknowledge & laugh inside. Maybe if a Wigga addresses me as Unc, it might change & I’ll be like “time to pay up whyte nephew. ” I don’t know, too much work for me…

[erasing 1,234 word message about the etymology of reck being the Old English word for care] [scanning the room to see if anyone noticed I almost typed a punchdown of the week-type post]

    Nothing to see here…

    [silently Homers into the bushes]

    One more rap idea:

“ driving at a reasonable speed makes me super hot” ( in a sexy way. Not the hot flashes way)
