I think the Nikole Hanna jones conversation is so overblown. People online are calling her a parental narcissist and questioning her choices. Raising a kid isn’t easy especially a black kid. I’m in a unique situation where my child is in private school even though we’re in a very good school district. Unfortunately because of her specific needs it wasn’t a good fit. So sometimes we start out thinking we’re doing right by our kids with the best intentions but things don’t always work out the way they’re supposed to. I think people are coming down on her and writing all these think pieces on her article because they have a problem with her and don’t really care about what the article was actually about.

    Hey Rod and Karen,

I just wanted to touch on one part of your conversation about Hannah Nikole Jones. You made the point that you’ve thought about what it means for parents who have the choice between putting your kids in a better school that’s more integrated and has more resources (apologies if I misunderstood your point here) and putting them in a less integrated school where they’re maybe more cared for but with less resources (because racism).

I come from a very black city in central Virginia. My parents did not have any real choices about where I went to school. Our city’s public schools are so black that even though I was in Gifted and Advanced Placement classes, I had maybe 2 white classmates through all 4 years of high school. I had very black teachers and even the few white teachers were pretty good.

I was always a little bit of an outsider even among my black peers, but I never felt out of place. Your comment made me wonder how that affected how I navigated my adult life as a black man, so I just wanted to highlight your comment as being an important one to consider when we’re talking about the cost of deciding where to send your kid.

Keep up the great work yall!

Entitely unrelated to my first comment, but Ihad Big Emotions just now related to something you suggested people watch. I finally got around to that Earth Wind & Fire documentary you reommended a few monts ago on the Pre-game podcast (yall really need to get behind this paywall if you can).

I don’t make news of it on the internet, but my dad died on April 5th of this year, and something about the way that documentary ended just destroyed me and made me cry, and so for right now I’m going to blame you for it Rod.

But truly, I just needed somewehere to put these emotions for a bit, love yall.

Oh that video of the guy getting punched was so satisfying.

Rod and Karen, I’ve been summoned, and I’m here to defend these parents too.

I did the research. According to the science, a 10-kg child would need to eat roughly 8 grams of THC to die. That’s about 800 gummies at the strong 10 mg dose, or 1,600 of the regular ones. This child ate how many? One? Two? That’s a 0.25% effort.

And I’m sure that was intentional. These are clearly responsible parents who sat the child down beforehand and explained the safe amount. Know your limits kid. One gummy, just enough to really relax, for real. And the child listened. That’s good parenting showing up in the child’s choices.

And what happened afterwards? The child took a nap. Ok it was a Hospital visit involved. Probably an interesting experience. Family did something g together, had a common goal without using screens.
    Bonding probably.
