This whole converse conversation is so frustrating it just makes me think people are looking for a reason to be upset. People were going as far as to say there was kkk in the shoestrings of the shoes in the ad. Thats when i completely checked out of this discourse. There are plenty of racist things I have to worry about when navigating this world as a black woman without looking for hidden meaning in a converse ad. Some people are looking for the outrage and need to step away from their phones sometimes.
I love ratchet music. It’s my jam. I can still recite every single lyric in Arkenelli’s song Put it in Your Mouth. Some people think the music today is nasty but they haven’t heard the 90’s and early 2000 stuff which was way worse.
Removing the slavery mentions makes sense. It might make white people sad. Who wants this? Sad white people might do bad things. So it’s prevention, basically. We Germans should learn from this. All those reminders of Nazi time are not exactly mood boosters.

Long time – Long time!
I am writing in because I felt like I was going crazy on Threads because I did not see the imagery of the Converse ad as racist or even see what people were talking about. Then people started editing the picture and pointing out what they saw, and suddenly, once the image was edited and someone told people what to think, it was undeniable! I was wondering how it could be undeniable if people had to do so much to make the racism clear to you in the first place? Then it snowballed into questioning your blackness if you didn’t agree or get the issue and dared to speak on it. You know what it reminded me of? That 2017 Dove ad where social media decided Dove turned a Black Woman white to show she was clean, but in context, that was not the intent of the commercial. I have not trusted social media on any of these things since. Maybe I am not on social media as much as some people, but this was the first instance where I saw people who I generally try to see their point telling people to shut up, don’t think for yourself, go along with the crowd, or you aren’t black enough. It was actually kind of disturbing to witness, especially as someone on the outside. It genuinely made me feel like I was missing something very obvious, but I couldn’t admit to something I could not see.
