After befriending James Brown’s son Teddy (who was killed in 1972), a then-18- or 19-year-old Al Sharpton – already a minister – became James Brown’s touring manager from 1973 to 1980.
It’s why he started wearing the processed hair. He considers James Brown a father figure since Sharpton’s own father abandoned his family. Meanwhile, James Brown used Sharpton to help him rebuild his political image after Brown endorsed Richard Nixon’s presidential re-election campaign in 1972.
